Can we talk lenses? (photo & video related)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:20 AM PDT

I'm trying to figure out the best all-around lens for both photo and video.

I recently switched from a Sony a6500 + Laowa 9mm combo to a Canon EOS RP+ Irix 15mm and find myself missing that extra 1.5mm for bathrooms and other small areas.

I've been considering other lenses and it seems there a several good options:

    Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D — $950

    Samyang xp 14mm f/2.4 — $750

    Samyang 14mm f/2.8 Mk2 — $500

    Samyang 14mm f/2.8 AF — $640

Out of these, which do people recommend? Is it worth spending the $$ on the Loawa vs the Samyang at half the price?

For Samyang users, how do you correct barrel distortion for video? I know it's possible to do in-camera with the AF version but what about MF lenses?

For those shooting with AF lenses, what's your method for maintaining consistent infinity focus?

Are there any options I'm missing? What is your go-to lens?

Any opinions on carbon fiber tripods?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 09:45 PM PDT

I currently have a Slik 700dx pro. Very happy with it. Works well and seems pretty durable. And is probably the cheapest piece of gear I own. But it's not exactly light compared to some of the other tripods.

I was looking at some of the carbon fiber tripods and was wondering if anyone had any feedback on getting one? I only just started looking into it, but this one https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1584513-REG/3\_legged\_thing\_legends\_bucky\_tripod\_bronze.html seemed pretty good. It's one of the less expensive tripods (for carbon fiber anyhow). And seems to check all the boxes I want. Extends up to 70 inches. Supports more then enough weight for my needs. And it weighs about half of the slik tripod.

    Any opinions?
